Student Affairs

In conjunction with the Academic Societies, the Office of Student Affairs serves as a resource for promoting the individual and professional growth and development of students at Harvard Medical School.
Nancy Oriol, M.D., Dean of Students, chairs the Council on Student Affairs and the Committee on Careers and co-chairs the Harvard University Committee of Deans of Students. She works closely with the Society Masters and Associate Masters to ensure that students successfully address such issues as career path/specialty choice, leaves of absence, or other academic or personal matters.

Carla Fujimoto, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, mentors and supports student groups through her work with Student Council and class-wide activities. At the
Student Affairs Office, faculty and staff are dedicated to meeting the needs of students throughout their enrollment at Harvard Medical School, including issues of career path, specialty choice, and resident match to the coordination of all major student events, such as Orientation, Match Day and Class Day. Student Affairs is also the liaison to many outside agencies, including Harvard University, the National Board, residency application programs, licensing boards, among others.
Within the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs (ORMA) recruits and provides supportive services to individuals from groups underrepresented in medicine and dentistry and promotes diversity within the Medical School particularly though the activities of the Inter-Society Multicultural Fellows Committee. ORMA sponsors a Pre-Matriculation Summer Program, geared toward accepted students interested in academic medicine and/or research, and the Harold Amos Biomedical Society, which meets monthly for presentations over lunch by invited guests, faculty, and students. Under the leadership of Faculty Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D the Office has been successful in developing and implementing a number of programs related to, mentoring, advising, and creating a positive living environment for all members of our community.
