The New Pathway MD Program

Recognizing that change—and the ability to cope with change—had become an integral key to success in the rapidly transforming, technology-dependent practice of modern medicine, the New Pathway in General Medical Education was an approach developed and launched by Harvard Medical School in 1985.

Through this revolutionary restructuring of the traditional medical curriculum, HMS students acquire not only the core scientific, biomedical, and clinical expertise they need to become successful physicians but also the analytical tools, adaptability skills, and flexible attitudes they require to become lifelong learners.

Every year, 135 students are admitted to Harvard’s New Pathway M.D. Program and benefit from its many distinct features. These include:
  • small and highly interactive tutorial learning sessions that allow students to learn from classmates who are transformed into colleagues;
  • a problem-based approach to learning in which fundamental medical concepts are mastered not as much by memorizing textbooks as much as through group investigation and analysis of real patient cases;
  • a strong emphasis on exploring the patient-doctor relationship and locating modern medical practices in its social context;
  • a multidimensional schedule that forces students to take responsibility for their own education—students will conduct their own library research and decide, on their own, to collaborate in external research, joint degree programs, or more—at HMS or with one of our many affiliates.
The New Pathway approach enables HMS graduates to play a leading role in harnessing emerging scientific and clinical information and new technologies towards more effective, more compassionate patient care.
