PEABODY SOCIETY
MISSION STATEMENT
----------------------------------------------------
The Francis Weld Peabody Society has as its purpose the ongoing development of a general medicine education experience at Harvard Medical School by students, faculty and staff committed to the qualities of excellence in patient care and research exemplified by Dr. Peabody.
The program seeks to prepare students for leadership roles in medicine by exploring the inter- relationships of those disciplines of those disciplines and social institutions that impact upon patient care.
Through the collaborative endeavors of its members and affiliates, the Peabody Society:
a) reviews the existing curriculum and recommends changes to the Course Directors, Council of Masters and Curriculum Committee;
b) develops and pilots new courses, including courses in advanced biomedical science, and other paracurricular programs;
c) sponsors events and programs that further the Society's mission, with an emphasis on inter- disciplinary and interinstitutional endeavors in community medicine, public health and policy and social medicine;
d) fosters scientific research by students and their participation in the Society's Research Forum and in intersociety research programs, and encourages students to seek Honors in a Special Field;
e) provides students with advisors for their personal and professional development, and for career guidance;
f) oversees (through the Master) the Assessment and Evaluation Unit of the Harvard Medical School, which develops and implements plans for assessment and evaluation of students, of individual courses, and of the Program in Medical Education, and provides consultative services to Harvard-affiliated individuals and institutions and to others who request its services.
To accomplish its purpose, the Society seeks to involve as active members an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional faculty with a broad range of interests and experience in general and graduate medical education.
The Francis Weld Peabody Society invites the participation of individuals with special interests in primary care and community medicine, health care policy and delivery, social medicine, and the basic sciences.
