Commencement speaker Donald Berwick, HMS lecturer on health care policy and former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told Harvard Medical School graduates: "We got our compass the day we decided to be healers. Our compass is one, simple question, and it will point us true north: How will it help the patient?” His full speech is available here.
Advice for New Doctors
Comments
Once in a while visit a Doctor as a patient for a regular check up without telling him you are a Doctor as well. You'll learn not to forget Two things. Empathy and Patience.
Be fully present. Listen well. Form "partnership"with patient to achieve goals of care. Embrace palliative care when "it's time."
"Listen" Like you're seeking to understand rather than to be understood.
"Don't Ask Questions!!"
Wait for him till he finished.
"Smile!"
Keep a big Smile in your face no matter what you passed through that day.
"Don't rush him!"
Don't give the patient the impression:Next Patient!!!.
Don't forget to look...and listen...to the
Patient amid all of technology's bells and
whistles.
Don berwick's message is powerful and profound.
Never give advice unless asked.
Adopt 'healing' not 'prescribing' as your practice.
Don't diagnose solely on the basis of elimination, try to solve the puzzle each patient's condition presents.
And please stay up-to-date with the research!! There are new diseases and cures coming out each day.
You know why so many patients go to the doctor and give their opinions on their affliction? Because the doctors today don't seem to be doing a satisfactory job!!
