The Molecular and Cellular Basis of Medicine
Molecular and Cellular Basis of Medicine provides an introduction to biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology. The course will cover not only well-established findings but also recent advances that have a particular importance in medicine. The first part of the course emphasizes the structure, function and turnover proteins, the mechanism and regulation of gene expression, protein sorting and membrane properties. The second part focuses on the biomedical pathways involved in energy metabolism, the major signal transduction networks, the cytoskeleton, cell division and death, and muscle function. The course will be taught through lectures, case presentations, tutorials and large group discussion sections. Through these course components we aim to provide students with a strong foundation, and the tools to understand the role that biochemistry, cell and molecular biology will have on the future practice of medicine.
- Tutor: Meets with 8 students 3 times per week for 1.5 hours to facilitate case discussion and problem solving. There are a total of 16 sessions in the 5 week course.
