What factors affect signal strength on an iPhone?

The iPhone can switch automatically between AT&T’s EDGE and 3G network.  3G coverage is not available in all locations, so sound quality and data throughput may not reach expectations in many areas. Tall building, or structures built with lots of metal in the walls may impede the signal.

How can I tell whether I am in coverage or not?

In the upper left corner of the display you will see three icons; The first (furthest to the left) is the Signal Strength indicator. This indicator has 5 bars that vary in height from short to tall. Fewer bars indicates a weaker signal, more bars indicates better signal. Next is the cellular carrier indicator. In the US, it will show AT&T. Next is the network indicator. This will change from 3G to EDGE to a wireless (Wi-Fi) icon, depending on what network it is currently connected to. When ever the cellular carrier is available, it will reflect either 3G or EDGE. If there is no cellular carrier available, the Wi-Fi indicator will show, with a signal strength indicator showing the strength of the Wi-Fi access point you are connected to.

Why is there a delay in receiving my messages?

Email delays can be caused by many things, not the least of which is low signal strength. The iPhone can be configured to check email in various ways. If you use Exchange ActiveSync, the delay will be very small (< 1 minute). If you use MobileMe, the delay is also very small (< 5 minutes). Other email configurations will check mail on a “Fetch” basis, meaning it will check every 15 minutes or so to see if the is mail on the email server.

How long can email messages remain on the iPhone?

Message retention is based on the account type and the account settings used.
Exchange ActiveSync: Until the messages is deleted, either on the iPhone or on your Exchange email client. By default, the iPhone will download the last 3 rolling days of messages to the phone for viewing. Older messages are not deleted from the server, they are just not visible. The 3 day default can be changed to up to 1 month.
POP/IMAP: Deleted messages are removed after 1 week by default (adjustable to up to never). Inbox messages are stored based on preferences set in Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars> Show :xx Recent Messages. The default is 25 recent messages. Any messages over the set amount are deleted from the iPhone in order to efficiently manage space on the iPhone. You can store up to 200 messages. The oldest messages are deleted first.

My handheld will not turn on. What should I do?

Plug the iPhone into the AC Adapter or a computer to charge the battery. Do not plug into a keyboard USB port, as this will not charge the battery. If the iPhone still does not turn on, then visit an Apple Store for support.
