Joint Degrees
An HMS education is about receiving a medical education that is
universally recognized as among the best in the world. It is also
about broadening your professional and personal horizons by taking
advantage of the world’s finest programs at some of the world’s
most prestigious institutions. Every year, approximately 18 percent
of the HMS student body elects to extend the scope of their medical
education by pursuing joint degrees in a multitude of disciplines
offered at HMS, Harvard, and our many institutional affiliates.
The M.D./Ph.D. Program
If you have a background in intensive scientific research, the M.D./Ph.D. Program offered by HMS may be of interest to you.
Funded primarily through the national Medical Scientist Training
Program (MSTP) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), students
in this program combine their HMS medical studies with a Ph.D.
in various basic sciences or in engineering offered at Harvard
University’s Graduate
School of Arts and Sciences through
the Division
of Medical Sciences (DMS) at HMS, at other faculties
at Harvard in Boston, or at the Schools
of Science and Engineering at MIT.
Regardless of the individual path you design for yourself, you
will graduate from the M.D./Ph.D. program ready to become a leader
in biomedical engineering, a renowned medical academician, or a
physician-scientist who will shape the future of medical research
as a section head of a government or private sector agency.
Students interested in combining the M.D. with a Ph.D. in Health Care Policy, History of Science, or Medical Anthropology are eligible to compete for special funding which will provide partial support of the costs of the dual degree course of study. Interested students must complete two separate admissions applications by the respective deadlines: 1) for M.D. application through AMCAS; and 2) for Ph.D. application to Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in the departments listed above. Selection will take place in early March once admissions decisions have been made by both Schools. Those applicants who are accepted to both Harvard Medical School and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will be automatically considered for funding.
