Welcome to the HMS Institutional Self-Study website.

 

Harvard Medical School welcomed the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) to its campus in March 2011 as part of its accreditation process that occurs every eight years.

Prior to the site visit, HMS engaged in an eighteen month self-study. Well over 450 faculty, students and staff participated in this process, which involved extensive planning, data collection, self-evaluation and analysis, synthesis and report writing.  Once again, this process affirmed the effectiveness of the Program in Medical Education and the excellence of those who make it so successful.

During the site visit, which ran from March 6-9, 2011, five members of an ad hoc survey team representing the LCME met with numerous faculty, staff and students to discuss all aspects of the educational curriculum, medical student life, faculty life and institutional resources and policies. The visit culminated in an exit interview with Provost Hyman and Dean Flier.

HMS received full accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2011. The LCME report lauded several strengths: the recent strategic planning process; the HMS curriculum, particularly the Principal Clinical Experience; the Office of Curriculum Services, student financial aid; student diversity programs; strong support for faculty role in education; and a rich academic environment. The next LCME site visit for HMS will be during the 2018-2019 academic year.
